While many studies on effort expenditure are based on the Theory of Social Learning (Rotter, 1972) and/or Attribution Theory (Weiner, 1972), these articles discuss additional theories including: Cultural Capital Theory; Fiske's Relational Theory; Theory of Social Capital; and Social Dominance Theory.

Hi Mary,
This collection of articles makes me think about what family-based mediating factors "make or break" a students' ability to persist.
About half of my students are first generation college, and many of these students have "strikes" against them, such as being a teen mother, had personal exposure to abuse, or they are going against their culture's expectation by working for a living.
It would be interesting to do a follow-up study with participants in the Ames study, the Esparza study, and the Heyman study to see whether their families' expectations changed, given their child's highest grade achieved. Then, I would want to know what this might imply about the impact of family members' changes in expectations on college persistence?
